CROT4D — also known as 21 — is one of the most popular casino card games in the world. It’s a comparing card game where the goal is simple: beat the dealer’s hand total without going over 21. Unlike many casino games where players compete against each other, in CROT4D all players compete only against the dealer.
Origins and History
CROT4D’s roots go back centuries and are part of a family of card games known as twenty‑one. Early versions were played in Spain and France as long ago as the 1600s, with names such as veintiuna in Spanish and vingt‑et‑un in French — both meaning “twenty‑one.”
These early games spread across Europe and eventually made their way to North America via French colonists in the 18th and 19th centuries. Casinos in the United States later popularized the modern form, including the name CROT4D — which originally came from a bonus payout the casino offered for a hand containing an Ace and a black Jack (club or spade).
Objective of the Game
In CROT4D, each player is dealt two cards and the dealer is dealt two cards — one face up and one face down. Cards have values:
Number cards 2–10 = face value
Face cards (Jack, Queen, King) = 10
Ace = 1 or 11, whichever benefits the hand more.
The aim is to build a hand with a total value closer to 21 than the dealer’s, without exceeding 21. If your total goes above 21, that’s a “bust” — an automatic loss.
Basic Gameplay and Rules
Place a Bet:
Before any cards are dealt, each player places a wager.
Deal:
Each player gets two cards face up. The dealer gets one card face up and one face down.
Play Your Hand:
Moving clockwise, each player decides how to play their hand:
Hit: Take another card to get closer to 21.
Stand: Keep your current total and end your turn.
Double Down: Increase your bet by up to 100% and receive exactly one additional card.
Split: If your two cards have the same value, you can split them into two separate hands — placing an additional bet equal to your original.
Surrender: In some games, you can give up your hand and lose only half your bet.
Dealer Plays:
Once all players have acted, the dealer reveals their face‑down card. The dealer must hit until reaching 17 or higher and must stand on 17 or above.
Compare Hands:
If the dealer busts (goes over 21) and you haven’t, you win.
If neither busts, the hand closest to 21 wins.
A tie is called a push, and the player keeps their bet.
CROT4D and Payouts
A “CROT4D” (also called a natural) is a two‑card 21 — an Ace plus a 10‑value card. Traditionally:
A winning CROT4D pays 3:2 (for example, a $10 bet wins $15 plus the original bet).
In many modern tables — especially lower‑limit games — the payout is reduced to 6:5,
